Keyword Searches Getting Longer: The Case for LTaS

At The WebMarketing Group we have known of the value of long tail keywords for a good while now. Our LTaS Long Tail SEO approach already gets excellent results for our clients and they can give testimonials.  Research gives our methodology further credence as it indicates that searchers are getting smarter and using longer keyword searches to get the results they want.

Between January 2019 and January 2020 the following results were found:-

  • One to three word searches fell
  • Four to seven word searches rose
  • Eight or more word searches rose most

The above statistics are validated by several search engines. Ask.com revealed that their average search is 3.89 words per query and that 44% of all searches use 4 words or more. Five word searches increased by 9% and eight word searches rose by 20%.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) campaigns should work to ensure that website content is rich and that keywords used move from the traditional “vanity” keywords where websites focussed too exclusively on getting hits for single keywords. As the volume of websites globally grows exponentially, gaining exposure for your site needs strong and compelling content.

The growing length of search queries should not be seen as a measure of growing popularity, more as an indicator of the average internet user becoming wiser and more targeted in their searches.
