Link Building Tactics – A Scalable Approach

At The WebMarketing Group, we always say that link building makes up the core of any SEO campaign.  It’s very simple: the more links you get from valuable sites, the better you rank on Google.

It’s an essential area of any search marketing campaign but it’s pretty time-consuming and  generally doesn’t scale well in the grand scheme of things.

But without it, you’ll find that it’s impossible to get noticed by the search engines.  Here are some top link building tactics taken from our knowledgable in-house, expertly trained link-building team.

There are a few solutions which have popped up in the link building world such as automated directories, link networks, social book marketing automation, sidebar links and forum spamming, and while these methods can produce some good links, they are low quality ones.

Scalable link building as we see it now

Scalable link building is about refining your link building process.   The best links, as we all know, are the ones which are built manually with time, care and attention.  It’s never a quick task and it will require hard work as we’ve discovered here at WMG, but you will definitely like the results.

Here are our thoughts on applying scalable link building to an SEO campaign:

1. Quality content and maximising outreach

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times, but we won’t stop shouting about quality content – it will always be the best foundation for scaling a link building campaign.   Writing great content is enough though because you also need to maximise your outreach.  If you have a great article that people are likely to link to, you need to get the most out of its potential and this means promoting your content.

Email marketing is a great solution for mass communication in one easy step.  Another benefit of using email marketing is that you will have access to important data such as email bounce rate and unopened rate.

Competitor analysis can also be very useful as you can contact people who have linked to your competitors’ sites.  If you can provide better, more up to date information than your competitor, you’ll stand a very good chance of getting  a backlink.

2. Incentives and giveaways

Just like inticing social networkers to become fans / followers on Twitter or Facebook, incentives can be great for pulling in links.  This can still be a lengthy and time consuming task as you need to build relationships with bloggers before approaching them with free giveaways.

The first hurdle that you will come across is people not showing an interest in your free product at all – so finding the right bloggers to target is your first step.  And when it comes to giving away free gifts in return for links, certain precautions will need to be taken  and you will need to have a good tracking system in place.

3. Guest blogging

If you can provide a blog owner with a high quality, well written blog that appeals to their audience, you can get some great anchor text links pointing to your domain.

Guest blogging isn’t a quick process and will require a certain level of relationship building, and a good blog post takes intelligence, insight and effort to write.   But the quality you link will be worth it if you choose the right websites to contact.  Always measure domain authority before you choose which sites to get in touch with.
