One member of the WebMarketing Group SEO Team (who shall remain unnamed) has a canny knack of pulling some stunning SEO analogies out of the blue, much to the amusement of the rest of us. These analogies occasionally fall wide of the mark (though we don’t tell him that!), but every now and then one really hits the nail on the head.
This was certainly the case when he came into the office one afternoon with his latest link building tip: “Every team needs a Brazilian striker”. Of course, this was met with bemused faces so we asked him to explain. Photo credit It turned out that the ‘Brazilian striker’ was the star in the team that won you games. That is, the really special link in your link profile that pushes you the extra yard in the rankings, whether that is up on to page 1 or from position #3 up to position #1. High domain authority, incredibly relevant site, great anchor text; he’s got the lot. Now, the Brazilian striker is no good in a rubbish team. He needs the support of his more reliable teammates who do the dirty work and allow him to flourish. Likewise, if he was all on his own against 11 men he wouldn’t be able to win either because strength in numbers definitely plays a part. Link profiles need the ‘water carriers’ in there; directory submissions, lower powered blogs, nofollowed comments. However, if you put a strong team in place and build a strong foundation, then when you sign the Brazilian striker he can make the difference and take you from mid table mediocrity to league champions! The key, though, is to remember the importance of your other players; without them, the superstar will rarely perform…
